Hills District Martial Arts: Taekwondo, Haidong Gumdo & Hapkido

Tournaments - 2015

2015 National Championships

Our team travelled down to Adelaide this year for the 2015 Taekwondo National Championships! The competition was difficult but our players managed to come away with some fantastic results!

Day 1 was the Technical Championships with our 6 person Poomsae Team competing. Our team showed great improvement over the recent year and achieved significantly better results.

Jenina Lui performed her Poomsae well, and achieved 6th Place in her large division.

Georgia Milner put up a strong performance in her first Poomsae, however a couple of minor mistakes brought her score down slightly and she achieved a 4th Place Bronze.

Harrison and Bradley Howard competed for the last time (hopefully for a while!) in the same division. After a great performance by Bradley he claimed a 3rd Place Bronze in the difficult division!

Juliet Lahood received an improved score in an equally tough division and came in at 5th Place.

Juliet and Harry also received a 4th Place Bronze for their Pairs Poomsae this competition!

Finally Noah Grofski improved on his previous attempts at Nationals by receiving a 4th Place Bronze after some close scores to the 3rd Place competitor!

Day 2 and 3 held our sparring divisions.

Michael Nader fought well in his first fight, putting all his effort and energy into it but was unfortunately unable to come away with the win. His performance was much improved since last competition.

Breanne Nader came up against a skilled opponent and managed to come away with the win in a great display of ability and spirit, netting out first Gold Medal of the competition and becoming National Champion for her division!

Georgia Milner blew through 2 rounds to claim our next Gold Medal and National Championship in her final competition as a Minor before moving up to the Cadets and Head Shots next year! She unfortunately got injured early in her second match but continued through for the win!

Justin Harvey fought up a division against a much taller opponent and narrowly came away with a Silver Medal, a fantastic job, especially at National Level against someone much bigger!

Kane Belcastro won in his first match, however due to an injury late in the second match, he was unable to progress further. His efforts earned him a Bronze Medal.

Joshua Waller progressed through three matches (the most of any of our fighters this year) to come away as National Champion with a Gold Medal. His first fight was difficult but he managed to come out ahead. He won his second fight via Knockout and his third opponent withdrew after a strong head kick.

Jenina Lui had the longest wait, unable to fight until 6pm when she was finally called up. This fight had both players putting it all on the line, scoring multiple head kicks each and finishing both physically and mentally exhausted. In the end, Jenina came away with the win and National Championship Gold Medal!

Daniel Monteiro kicked off our Sunday fights. Unfortunately due to time constraints, the round times were significantly decreased and video protest was removed. Daniel fought well against his opponent but unfortunately wasn't able to catch up in the time he had.

Claire Davis won her first match with an improved performance and some great head shots, however she like Daniel unfortunately suffered from the reduced rounds and video replay and missed out in the second match to claim a Bronze.

Grant Carver also fought through two matches. His first match was almost even, and he managed to pull ahead in the last round. His second fight was against a very skilled and experienced player, who narrowly beat him in the last round. Grant came very close to levelling the score in the last 5 seconds, missing a headshot by a hair!

Jerry Lui was our final competitor of the competition and fought a difficult fight in the Master's division (30yrs+). After a barrage of head kicks from his opponent, Jerry came away with a Silver Medal

All in all a very improved performance from our team this year! The spirit and support from our team was among the best in the room, and our support team ensured that every competitor received loud cheers and applause!

Sydney Taekwondo Festival 2015

The Sydney Taekwondo Festival was revived this year in Liverpool with over 200 competitors! It was a great turn out with many clubs from all over Sydney, NSW and ACT attending. Our team of 14 Competitors attended the competition and made a great impact, with some competing across multiple disciplines or divisions! The final Medal Tally was 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze!

In addition to the impressive medal haul, our club was awarded the Spirit Award for our team unity, cheering and martial arts ettiquette and attitude! Daniel Monteiro also received the best performance Junior Male trophy for his difficult win against a very tall and experienced fighter. World Cadet Championships 2015

Juliet Lahood recently returned from her trip to Muju, Korea for the World Cadet Championships!

The Cadet division is for athletes between the ages of 12 and 14yrs, and attracts very high level athletes from around the world. This is the second time the competition has been held, and the first time one of our students has been selected to attend. Juliet won her place at the 2015 Australian Open and had been in intense training up until the very last day.

After arriving, the team engaged in some further training to get used to the atmosphere and went to the competition. Juliet fought her first match against the current European Champion and unfortunately came out behind at the end. Despite being outmaneuvered, she continued to fight until the last second, gathering as many points as possible and did extremely well for her first international experience.

This kind of experience is a possibility for all of our members. If you are interested in Sparring Competition, make sure you attend your age group class on Monday to get started on your competition journey!

NSW All Schools Competition 2015

Our members had a great time competing at the NSW All Schools Competition! We sent a huge team of 33 players who competed throughout the day representing both their school and their club with great performances.

The All Schools Competition is a friendly, school level competition that allows competitors to face someone of their own size and belt level, great for beginners and experts alike. The environment was great for all of our first timers who went out there and gave it their best. We had students enter from 19 local schools!

Successful Return from Vietnam

A big congratulations to our two Australia Representatives on their successful return from the International Clubs Taekwondo Championships. Both Sam Parsons and Claire Davis did their club and their country proud in a couple of fantastically fought matches in Vietnam! Both girls travelled with Master Sam to the event and participated in a couple of days training alongside the other Australian Representatives.

Sam fought in two different divisions, the Open and Olympic Division. The Olympic weight classes are slightly different than normal weight classes and include almost twice as many participants with a larger possible gap in weight and power. Sam managed to fight her way through many competitors and came away with a Bronze Medal in each division, losing narrowly in the final round of both Semi Final matches.

Claire competed in the Junior (15 - 17yrs) division and showed a massive improvement in intensity and technique to come out ahead of her fighter in the Finals, earning herself a Gold Medal with a Knockout in the Second Round!

This is the third time that Hills District Martial Arts has attended this competition held by the Intercontinental Clubs Taekwondo Organisation and the second time that Sam has attended in Vietnam (and made a very impressive comeback!). Hills would like to thank the ICTO and Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan in Western Australia for the invitation and opportunity!

Great Success at the 2015 Australian Open

What a weekend at the Australian Open! Hills District returned for the second year with a vengeance. With a team only slightly bigger than last year, the results were much improved all around!

The first day kicked off with Poomsae and Senior Sparring. Sam Parsons took the mat against a top ranked fighter from Egypt. She put up a great fight and gained some amazing experience, but unfortunately was unable to come away with the win. This was followed up by an impressive and synchronised performance by Harrison Howard and Juliet Lahood competing in the Pairs Poomsae event, coming away with a Bronze Medal!

Juliet continued into a highly contested division in the Cadet's Female Poomsae, and just missed out on the final round by one position. Harrison and Bradley Howard once again competing in the same division (Cadet Male) managed to advance through to the final round and after a long day of waiting, Harry came away with a second Bronze Medal!
